Per què un club de cultura en anglès?

Catalunya és a la cua d'Europa pel que fa al coneixement de la llengua anglesa, quelcom bàsic per garantir el futur professional del nostres joves i la competitivitat de la nostra economia en un món global. Capgirar aquesta realitat és un objectiu de país i tothom hi hem de col·laborar.

La revista Catalonia Today i la cooperativa Abacus han unit forces per crear ECClub, el primer Club de Cultura en Anglès de Catalunya. L'activitat central de l'ECClub serà la creació de grups de lectura en anglès a les botigues Abacus de Catalunya i el País Valencià, coordinats per professors nadius. A més a més, es programaran tot un seguit d'activitats culturals en llengua anglesa (cinema, teatre, sortides, visites guiades, xerrades, conferències, viatges, continguts online, tasts de vins i productes de la terra, etc.) amb l'objectiu de millorar el nivell d'anglès de la població catalana.

Why have a culture club in English?

Catalonia is very aware that fluency in English is an important skill for everybody wishing to be involved in an increasingly globalised world, and especially for young people who have to seek work in a very competitive market. English is also the language used by many of the international community that have settled in Catalonia making it their new home. The ECClub provides them too with an opportunity to meet people and get to know more about Catalonia itself.

Catalonia Today magazine and Abacus Cooperative have joined forces to create the ECClub, the first English Culture Club in Catalonia. A central pillar of this club is the creation of reading groups in selected stores in Catalonia and Valencia, led by native English speakers. In addition there will be a series of activities available in English including cinema, theatre, outings, guided tours, talks, conferences, trips and advantages such as a discount on some wines and locally produced goods.

Our Honorary President

Hem volgut buscar una personalitat destacada per encapçalar aquest projecte, i ens fa molta il·lusió que el reconegudíssim escriptor Tom Sharpe hagi acceptat el càrrec de "President d'Honor" del Club, perquè considerem que reuneix dues característiques que simbolitzen l'esperit del club: és una figura cabdal de les lletres angleses, i és un "català" d'adopció que s'estima Catalunya.
El novelista anglès Tom Sharpe (Londres, 30 de març de 1928) és una de les figures de referència de l'humor britànic. A les seves novel·les hom hi troba un humor corrosiu, fins i tot de vegades cruel, que divideix els seus lectors entre els que el consideren molt ofensiu i els que el troben un mestre de l'humor. La seva temàtica és variada, des dels llibres inspirats en la Sudàfrica de l'Apartheid que va conèixer de primera mà, fins als que critiquen el sistema educatiu (Wilt i seqüeles), l'esnobisme de la classe alta anglesa (Vicis ancestrals i Porterhouse Blue), el món literari (La gran persecució), extremismes polítics de tot tipus, la burocràcia i l'estupidesa en general. Els seus personatges fan servir sovint un llenguatge vulgar i explícit i practiquen tota classe d'actes sexuals. Altres vegades ridiculitza la forma de parlar o de comportar-se de determinats grups socials.
Viu a la Costa Brava des de fa més de 20 anys.

We chose our Honorary President, Tom Sharpe, to head our project, as we felt he symbolised the spirit of the club. He is both a leading figure in English literature and an adopted son of Catalonia who brought together. We are delighted that he accepted our invitation.

Tom Sharpe (London, 30 March 1928) is a leading English comic novelist whose biting satirical humour has created debate between those who consider his work inspired and others who find it offensive. His novels vary from those inspired by his experiences in South Africa under apartheid (Riotous Assembly) to those criticising the education system (Wilt), the snobbery of the upper classes in England (Ancestral Vices, Porterhouse Blue). Others put the peculiarities of an English literary elite, bureaucracy and stupidity in general under the spotlight. His characters make liberal use of the more expressive registers of the English language and often display a variety of sexual appetites. He has lived on The Costa Brava for more than 20 years.

Catalonia Today

CATALONIA TODAY es la revista mensual d'informació general en llengua anglesa del Grup Hermes, editor dels diaris Avui, El Punt i El 9 Esportiu. Des de 2005 ofereix les notícies en anglès des d'un punt de vista català als residents i visitants estrangers i als catalans que volen mantenir i millorar el seu nivell d'anglès. L'èxit de Catalonia Today es tradueix en més de 15.000 exemplars mensuals, més de 4.500 subscriptors, i més de 4.000 descàrregas mensuals dels podcasts al web i l'aplicació gratuïta per iPhone/iPad.

Catalonia Today is a monthly general interest colour magazine published in English by Grup Hermes, publishers of the Catalan newspapers Avui, El Punt and El 9 Esportiu. It has been providing news in English from a Catalan point of view since 2005, initially in a newspaper format. 15,000 copies are printed each month, 4,500 going directly to subscribers and the remainder distributed to newsagents across Catalonia. There are also more than 4,000 downloads each month of the free podcasts available directly from the web site or via the free applications for iPhone and iPad

Abacus Cooperativa

ABACUS és la cooperativa més gran de Catalunya, amb més de 700.000 associats.
